Faculty Candidate Presentation: D. Anthony Tolentino

Presenter: D. Anthony Tolentino, PhD, RN-BC, Research Fellow, National Clinician Scholars Program Fellow, Institute for Health Policy and Innovation, Department of Systems, Populations and Leadership, University of Michigan College of Nursing

Talk Title: Cracking the bamboo ceiling: A road to health equity for Filipino-Americans with type 2 diabetes through social justice informatics

Summary: His presentation will highlight how racism impacts the health of minoritized groups and the need for more Filipino- and Asian-American representation in research and leadership, particularly in T2DM research. He will discuss the evolution of his research program from doing applied clinical informatics work to leveraging technology to address issues of T2DM management among Filipino- and Asian Americans.

BIO: Dr. Tolentino is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Michigan School of Nursing and a clinician scholar at the Institute of Healthcare Policy and Innovation as part of the National Clinician Scholars Program. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona under the mentorship of Dr. Sheila Gephart. He has worked as a nurse informaticist and an EHR educator for a large not-for-profit health system specializing in workflow analysis, health information technology adoption, EHR support, implementation, and optimization.

His current research pivots from nurses’ user experience with the EHR to advancing health equity by leveraging nursing knowledge and health information technology tools to address the diabetes care gap among Filipino Americans. He is currently conducting several studies, including a qualitative study examining the successful management of type 2 diabetes among Filipino Americans. His goal is to reduce health inequity in diabetes care using informatics interventions.
