Faculty Candidate Presentation: Inah Kim, PhD, RN

Sleep Disturbance and Physical Activity: An Ecological Momentary Assessment Approach

She has participated in a variety of interdisciplinary research projects involving patients with diabetes, cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) while developing an expertise in applying cutting-edge technology. Dr. Kim has a long-standing interest in means of improving physical activity in patients with chronic disease and in developing related interventions for this population.

Given her interest in physical activity among chronically ill patients, her doctoral dissertation study explored the impacts of sleep disturbance on physical activity in 56 patients with COPD. She explored the relationships among sleep, physical activity and psychological symptoms using ecological momentary assessment (EMA), an innovative methodology that captures real-time data in natural settings. She applied an advanced longitudinal data analysis method to real-time data collected using an EMA device over seven days. In her presentation, Dr. Kim will discuss her findings on sleep disturbance and physical activity in COPD patients as well as how EMA will be applied in her future research.
