“The BSN-IH program has taught me to look at a patient through a lens that gives the perspective of treating the whole person rather than focusing solely on the issue that resulted in their admission to a hospital. It utilizes traditional nursing foundations while incorporating a holistic and integrative approach to patient care. Throughout this program, I have been taught to incorporate many non-pharmacological nursing interventions into patient care, such as guided imagery, touch therapy, music therapy, and aromatherapy. I have learned to take into account the mind, body, and spiritual well-being of a person, while also learning about self-care techniques for myself. Self-care is something that this unique nursing program emphasizes throughout the curriculum. Putting a conscious emphasis on taking time for our personal well-being is as important as emphasizing the well-being of those we serve. I was hesitant to leave my life in Tucson behind, but I am so grateful to have chosen this career path and for getting into this outstanding program."
BSN-IH Curriculum
Students admitted to the BSN-IH professional program must complete a rigorous curriculum consisting of 59 credit hours of upper division Nursing coursework as well as meet the general education requirements of the University. It is highly recommended that applicants complete the University's general education requirements prior to enrolling in upper division Nursing courses.

Level 1 – 15 Units
Level 1 BSN-IH Course – 1 Unit
This is the first in a series of three courses that provide a conceptual, integrative approach to selected pathophysiological phenomena and human responses to illness. This course is designed to give the student an understanding of pathophysiological concepts and their application to clinical practice. In addition, the course will integrate concepts related to aging, genetics-environmental factors, and emerging research topics that influence health and disease.
Level 1 BSN-IH Course – 6 Units
This theory course is focused on comprehensive health/wellbeing assessment of diverse healthy populations including adults, children, families, and communities. Principles of integrative health are explored to enhance health/wellbeing through culturally congruent, relationship-based nursing practice. Health promotion models/theories provide the basis for behavioral support and change strategies.
Level 1 BSN-IH Course – 5 Units
In this field immersion course, basic nursing skills essential to health/wellbeing assessment and promotion will be practiced in skills laboratory, simulation, acute care, and community-based care systems. Skill development will be focused on comprehensive health/wellbeing assessment; interprofessional and therapeutic communication; and clinical decision making with application of culturally congruent, evidence-based integrative therapeutics for health promotion.
Level 1 BSN-IH Course – 2 Units
This course is an overview of nursing knowledge development as a systematic yet innovative process linking research to professional nursing practice. The main goal is to help students learn about the research process and other important patterns of knowing that together comprise the larger picture of the scientific process and scholarly inquiry in nursing. Students will acquire knowledge and experiences to help them achieve the following: Integrate evidence-based knowledge into practice; critically read reports of research for their own practice; and develop beginning attributes of a nurse seeking knowledge through scientific and clinical inquiry.
Level 1 BSN-IH Course – 1 Unit
This is the first in a series of three courses that provides terminology and basic concepts involved with the approval and regulation processes, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and pharmaocodynamics, interactions, adverse effects and monitoring of commonly used drugs, with emphasis on clinical applications in various patient populations.

This field immersion course is focused on nursing care for diverse individuals and families experiencing common acute and chronic physical and/or behavioral health conditions across the lifespan (including pediatrics, childbearing families, and geriatrics). Emphasis is on culturally congruent, evidence-based integrative therapeutics for the restoration/preservation of health/wellbeing.
Level 2 BSN-IH Course – 2 Units
This course provides a comprehensive overview of high quality, safe care, and patient-care technology. Focus will be on knowledge and application of the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Open School Competencies in quality and safety as they relate to healthcare in nursing and patient-centered care. Students integrate knowledge related to quality and safety into patient-care technology. Concepts learned and applied in the course include professionalism, teamwork, and evidence-based practice.
Level 2 BSN-IH Course – 1 Unit
This is the second in a series of three courses that provides terminology and basic concepts involved with the approval and regulation processes, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and pharmaocodynamics, interactions, adverse effects and monitoring of commonly used drugs, with emphasis on clinical applications in various patient populations.
Level 3 – 15 Units
Level 3 BSN-IH Course – 1 Unit
This is the third in a series of three courses that provide a conceptual, integrative approach to selected pathophysiological phenomena and human responses to illness. This course is designed to give the student an understanding of pathophysiological concepts and their application to clinical practice. In addition, the course will integrate concepts related to aging, genetics-environmental factors, and emerging research topics that influence health and disease.
Level 3 BSN-IH Course – 7 Units
This theory course is focused on nursing care of diverse individuals and families experiencing complex physical and/or behavioral health conditions across the lifespan. Emphasis is on culturally congruent, evidence-based integrative therapeutics for the restoration/preservation of health/wellbeing of individuals with severe and/or complicated care needs.
Level 3 BSN-IH Course – 6 Units
In this field immersion course, clinical decision making with application of culturally congruent, evidence-based integrative therapeutics for restoration/preservation of health/wellbeing in the context of severe and/or complicated care needs across the lifespan will be practiced in skills laboratory, simulation, and inpatient/outpatient settings.
Level 3 BSN-IH Course – 1 Unit
This is the third in a series of three courses that provides terminology and basic concepts involved with the approval and regulation processes, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and pharmaocodynamics, interactions, adverse effects and monitoring of commonly used drugs, with emphasis on clinical applications in various patient populations.
Level 4 – 14 Units
Level 4 BSN-IH Course – 5 Units
This course prepares baccalaureate nursing students as population focused nurse generalists. Through synthesis of nursing and public health sciences, students develop population-focused skills to promote and protect population health.
Level 4 BSN-IH Course – 4 Units
This course introduces core systems management and leadership content, including leadership roles and their application to a variety of health care settings.
Level 4 BSN-IH Course – 5 Units
This course applies core management and leadership content, including leadership roles and their application to a variety of health care settings. Clinical practice provides a Clinical Preceptorship opportunity to perform in the roles of the professional nurse in various settings, to gain experience with critical thinking, and to apply theory to nursing practice with diverse client populations across the life span and in various stages of health.

Gilbert University Center
At the beginning of your journey to your BSN degree, you will be working in simulation-based learning spaces to practice the skills necessary to be a nurse. You will utilize these facilities during classroom learning, but they are also open and available for students to come in on off hours and practice. The College of Nursing has facilities in Tucson, Phoenix, and Gilbert for students enrolled in our programs.
