Faculty Candidate Presentation: Antidepressant Adherence in Active Duty Army Soldiers

Shawn P. Gallagher, MS, APRN-BC, Doctoral Candidate


Dr. Gallagher earned his Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree and a Masters of Science with a concentration in Psychiatric Nursing degree at the University of Rhode Island. He also earned a Post-Master’s Certificate in Family/Primary Care Nurse Practitioner studies at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia. He is Board Certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as an Adult Psychiatric-Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist and Family Nurse Practitioner.

Recently, Dr. Gallagher completed the Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing program at the University of Arizona. His dissertation research was on antidepressant adherence in active duty Army Soldiers. He plans to apply for funding to continue medication adherence research in vulnerable populations.

In the private sector and as an Army Officer, Dr. Gallagher has held a variety of positions and responsibilities throughout his career. They include staff and advanced practice nursing on inpatient behavioral health units, advanced practice in outpatient behavioral health clinics and psychiatric consultation-liaison services, leadership roles on inpatient behavioral health and substance use residential treatment programs, and in specialized roles focused on improving quality and safety, accreditation readiness, and regulatory compliance in health care settings. While in the Army, he also served in leadership and advanced practice roles on a combat stress team in Germany and Iraq.

Dr. Gallagher has presented publicly on suicide prevention, behavioral health stigma, psychiatric disorders, and traumatic brain injuries in military Service Members. He has also served on public-private behavioral health partnership committees and steering committees to implement Congressionally mandated Department of Defense behavioral health initiatives.
