College of Nursing Mission

The College of Nursing, a professional college of the University of Arizona, a public, land-grant, research institution, is in accord with the policies and purposes of the University. The purposes of the College are defined as education, research and scholarship, and service. The Mission of the College of Nursing is to provide undergraduate and graduate education, generate and expand nursing knowledge, and provide service to the community. Its communities of interest include both external and internal constituencies. (Internal constituencies include the Arizona Board of Regents, AHSC administration, faculty, staff, administrative professionals and students of the College and the University community as a whole. External constituencies with which the College works directly include alumni; other health care providers and recipients of care; groups of professional colleagues including those at other educational institutions; credentialing agencies including governmental and professional groups; employers and clinical agencies. Other External constituencies include the Arizona Legislature, benefactors, College Community Advisory Board, potential students and families.).

The College is a learning community that fosters the development of its constituents through enactment of its values of excellence, creativity, balance and social responsibility. The community professes the beliefs of human dignity, integrity, altruism, autonomy and social justice in nursing practice.

The College conducts its mission to provide nursing education by preparing professional nurses who function in various contexts related to the health care needs of the people in Arizona and society in general. The College prepares individuals who engage in practice, scholarship and research that advance nursing knowledge and service. Partnerships between faculty, staff and students, and among the College and its communities of interest are valued as important aspects of an effective learning environment. The philosophical basis underlying the educational mission of this learning community is described in the faculty Philosophy Statement.

The College conducts its mission to generate nursing knowledge by fostering and sustaining programs of research and scholarship. Targeted substantive areas of research are the means through which systematic knowledge is developed and resources are mobilized and allocated. Programs of research are directed toward challenging and extending the boundaries of nursing knowledge and enhancing the health and well-being of individuals, communities, and nations.

The College conducts its mission to serve the community by providing leadership in professional and health-related activities. The service mission is designed to meet local, State, National and International health care needs.
