Master of Science:  Nursing

General Information

The University of Arizona College of Nursing offers the Master of Science (MS) with a major in nursing that maximizes the use of online technology. The program features multiple options. Depending upon the option selected, the student completes 40 to 43 credits for the MS degree.

In keeping with the introduction of the Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) as the terminal degree for advanced practice nursing, The University of Arizona College of Nursing has revised its graduate program offerings. Fall Term 2008 will mark the last time to enter the Master of Science degree program with a nurse practitioner option. Thereafter, nurses interested in advance practice nursing preparation will apply for admission to the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program. Admission to the 2008 Fall Term will require full-time enrollment (minimum of 9 credits per term).

Upon completing the Master's degree, the graduate will:

  • Integrate knowledge and competencies, as related to area of focus, from the core content areas as a facilitator of nursing care with individuals, groups, families and communities.
  • Use competencies associated with critical thinking; communication; intervention; and research to facilitate quality health care.
  • Use critical thinking and clinical scholarship to expand the body of nursing knowledge for improving nursing practice.
  • In advanced nursing practice roles, apply advanced knowledge in health/physical assessment; physiology and pathophysiology; clinical experience in rural area; and pharmacology, in addition to core knowledge areas.

Requirements for the Master’s Degree
University requirements for the master's degree are outlined in the Graduate Catalog. Specific requirements of the College of Nursing are:

- Completion of a minimum of 40-43 graduate level credits, which includes completion of a thesis or thesis option for 3 credits.

A limit of 6 credits of course work transferred from an accredited institution, may be considered for application toward a master's degree by the College of Nursing.

Requirements for a 40-43 credit Master of Science degree can be completed in four semesters of full-time study. The student may elect to study on a part-time basis.

Enrollment in clinical nursing courses requires current registered nurse licensure and is conditional upon the student's attaining and maintaining the license in good standing.

All M.S. level students complete the following 15 units of core courses:

NURS 503 Human Diversity and Ethhics (3 credits)
NURS 504 Conceptual Models (3 credits)
NURS 505 Health Policy, Finance & Health Promotion
(3 credits)
NURS 530 Methods in Nursing Research (3 credits)
NURS 910 Thesis or NURS 909 Master's Report (3 credits)

Additional credit requirements, by option, include:
