Welcome Message from the Dean

Welcome to the University of Arizona College of Nursing! I am delighted you are visiting our website and want to learn more about the College and our commitment to excellence. We are extremely proud of our academic programs, research programs, faculty, students, and alumni and would like to share information about them with you.

The UA College of Nursing was founded in 1957 and by the 1980’s achieved national and international recognition as one of the top ranked colleges of nursing in the nation. The UA College of Nursing is currently ranked among the top 6% of graduate nursing programs in the nation according to U.S. News and World Report. A commitment to excellence in teaching, research, scholarship, and service aptly describes the essence and contributions of the College of Nursing. We are dedicated to providing a premier educational experience for our students at the baccalaureate and doctoral levels. The College has also made a commitment to enhance the availability of educational opportunities to communities through the use of online and telecommunication teaching methods.

The UA College of Nursing offers programs of excellence that lead to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with a major in nursing. The baccalaureate programs are recognized for their academic and clinical strength. The College’s partnership with area health care organizations have provided funding to offer a 14 month Accelerated BSN Partnership Program for College Graduates. This innovative program began in June 2003. This program is critical to the College in meeting the urgent State and national need for professional nurses. Both our doctoral programs maximize the use of online delivery. Graduates of our doctoral programs are nurse scientists and practitioners who are shaping health care across the nation and around the world.

“First in Arizona” The UA College of Nursing was the first PhD with a major in nursing west of the Mississippi. The College provides leadership throughout the State and the nation for the preparation of nurse scientists and scholars. PhD students focus their programs of study in the following research areas: 1) Understanding Mechanisms to Prevent and Treat Biological Injury, 2) Reducing Risks and Promoting Health in Vulnerable Populations, and 3) Managing Consequences of Aging or Chronic Illness. Each area provides coursework in substantive theory and research methods; provides intensive research mentored experiences with internationally renowned faculty; and, prepares the student for the dissertation research and for assuming the role of scientist and scholar as a PhD prepared nurse.

“First in Arizona” The UA College of Nursing was one of the first 20 DNP programs offered in the nation and the first in Arizona. Our DNP students from across the nation acquire advanced practice knowledge and demonstrate expertise in evidence based practice inquiry and application at the highest level of advanced practice. Nurses with an earned BSN or Master’s prepared nurses seeking nurse practitioner (NP) specialties can select advance practice preparation as an Adult NP, Adult Acute Care NP, Family NP or Adult Psychiatric Mental Health NP. Master’s prepared advanced practice nurses graduate with a strong scientific foundation for practice and the ability to translate knowledge quickly and effectively to benefit patients in the daily demands of practice environments. The DNP graduate will know how to manage knowledge, use effective tools to support clinical decision making, and apply methodologies rules to evaluate the evidence.

The UA College of Nursing has an outstanding faculty, many of whom have earned national and international reputations for excellence in teaching, research, and scholarship. The College is consistently ranked highly for its academic and research programs. Health care institutions and educational programs heavily recruit graduates of the programs, and many of our alumni hold leadership positions across the nation and abroad.

We welcome your interest in the University of Arizona College of Nursing. If you are a prospective student, we encourage you to enter our academic programs in this exciting, challenging, valued, and rewarding profession. Join our pursuit in the commitment to excellence.

Sincerely,

Carolyn L. Murdaugh, PhD, RN, FAAN
